1. Agreement to Terms

By accessing or using On the River, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree to these Terms, you may not access or use the service.

These Terms should be read with our Privacy Policy, Acceptable Use Policy, End User License Agreement (for the iOS app), and Disclaimer.

2. Description of Service

On the River is a detailed map and route planner for rivers and canals across Britain, Ireland, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium. You can browse named waterways, look up locks, clubs, and channel hints, and plan a route along the water, on foot, or in a straight line, then share a link or export GPX.

The service is a planning aid only. It is not a regulated navigation product, not an official flood-warning service, and not a substitute for local knowledge, inspection, notices, lock status, or access permission. Gauge readings, published draft limits, and other map details may be incomplete or wrong. You go on the water at your own risk. See the Disclaimer.

3. User accounts

You can browse, plan a session route, share a URL, export GPX, and turn on live layers without an account. To save named routes, keep favourites, or use Detailed or Satellite map styles on the website, you must register for an account with Apple, Google, or email and password. Email and password accounts must confirm via the email link before those features are available.

You must provide accurate information and keep your account details updated. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account. You must be able to agree to these Terms to create an account.

4. User conduct

You agree not to:

  • Violate any applicable laws or regulations
  • Infringe the rights of others
  • Use the service for any illegal or unauthorised purpose
  • Transmit any viruses or malicious code
  • Interfere with or disrupt the service
  • Attempt to gain unauthorised access to the service

The Acceptable Use Policy forms part of these Terms.

5. Intellectual property

The service and its original content, features, and functionality are owned by Things That Ltd and are protected by UK and international copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws. Map data and other third-party material remain subject to their published licences and attribution.

6. Termination

We may terminate or suspend your account and access to the service immediately, without prior notice or liability, for any reason, including breach of these Terms. You may delete your account at any time from Sign in / Account. Deleting the account removes the auth user, saved routes, and favourites.

7. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Things That Ltd will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including loss of profits, data, use, goodwill, or other intangible losses, or for injury, damage, or other consequences arising from your use of or inability to use the service, or from reliance on map data, routes, gauges, or other content. Our aggregate liability will not exceed the greater of £100 or the amounts you paid for the service in the 12 months preceding the claim. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations; in such cases, those limits apply to the fullest extent permitted.

Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

8. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, excluding conflict of laws principles. Courts located in England and Wales will have exclusive jurisdiction, except where mandatory law provides otherwise.

9. Changes to Terms

We reserve the right to modify or replace these Terms at any time. We will provide notice of any changes by posting the new Terms on this page and updating the "Last updated" date. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

On the River

Rivers and canals, mapped for going somewhere. I built this partly to see if I could paddle to a certain spot, and as a learning project that I could share.

Britain, Ireland, France, the Netherlands and Belgium: named waterways, locks, clubs, channel guides, and route planning. Sign in to save routes, keep favourites, and use Detailed or Satellite map styles. Saved routes and favourites follow your account across devices.

Browse the network, open a waterway page, and look up locks, clubs, photos, and channel hints. Click to plan a route along the water, switch to a footpath for a portage, then share a link or export GPX.

Still a work in progress. If something is wrong, or you have a feature idea, use Feedback / Support. Developed by Jack Prosser.

Planning only. Check local conditions, notices and access before travel. You go on the water at your own risk. We accept no liability. Full disclaimer
